What is a DNS zone?
A DNS zone is a portion of the DNS namespace that is managed by a specific organization or administrator. When a web browser or network device needs to find the IP address for a domain name, it performs a DNS lookup – essentially a DNS zone check. A common mistake’ is to associate a DNS zone with a domain name or a single DNS server. In fact, a DNS zone can contain multiple subdomains’ and multiple zones can exist on the same server.
You can access and edit the DNS zone for your website in a few easy steps.
Watch the video below to know more,
- Log in to your Bluehost panel and from your menu select the “Domains” option.
- Click on the dropdown menu of the domain whose DNS records you want to access and edit. Please make sure your Nameservers point to us for any changes made here to be reflected for the domain.
- Select the ‘DNS’ option from the menu. This will open up the DNS records of your domain name. You can view all your DNS records like:
- Address Records or A records
- MX records
- SRV records
- TXT records
- AAAA records
Now that you know how to access your DNS Zone let us see how you can edit it.
Let’s start with A records. Click on the ‘Add record’ button under the A record section.
Now add the details required like
- Host record
- Points to (the IP address)
- TTL (Time to live)
Please note that you can select the already available options from TTL which can’t be less than 4 hours and greater than 7 days. Once you have put in all the details click on ‘Save’. Once saved you can check if the records have been added by checking the list of records under A records.
Let us look at adding another record, this time a CNAME record. Just like before, in the CNAMe section, click on the ‘Add Record’ button.
Add the required details like
- Host record
- Points to (domain or subdomain)
Once you have added all the details, click on ‘Save’. And that’s how you can add a new record to your domains DNS zone.
If you wish to edit a record, click on the three dots next to the record you want to edit. And from the dropdown, select the edit option. This opens up the details of the record, make changes to the record and click on ‘Save’ and your record will be edited.
And if you want to delete a record, then click on the three dots next to the record you want to delete and select the ‘Remove option from the dropdown menu. This will lead to a pop-up, click on ‘Confirm’ to delete the record. Please note that this action cannot be undone. Therefore make sure you select the right record you want to delete.
If you wish to restore your DNS zones back to default, click on “Reset Zones to Default”. A pop-up will appear where you will need to confirm your desire to reset zones to default. Please note that restoring the default zones will erase any modification you have made to your DNS zone records.
And with that, you now know how you can access and edit the DNS Zone of your Domain Name.
