Parked Domain Names: The How and Why

Reserving a domain name for the future is a great idea if you have an business idea in mind, are currently working on building a website, or have found the perfect domain name that you don’t want to lose. In such cases, you can book or park a domain name. Let’s answer the question of what is a parked domain.

What is a parked domain?

A parked domain is when a user decided to purchase a domain and retain it without web hosting a functional website on it. The domain name, while the address is active, can have a messaging of ‘under construction’ or ‘Coming Soon’.

Why have a Parked Domain?

There are a couple of good reasons why users buy and park domains, namely:

1. Reserving the name: So you’ve found the perfect domain name but you’re yet to build a functional website. That’s a good reason to park a domain name that you think might otherwise be snatched up while you work on building your website. Even if you don’t have a website plan in mind right now, it’s a good idea to park your domain name for the future.
2. Website Work in Progress: You could be in the process of building your website, having only secured your domain name. As mentioned above, you could always add an ‘Under Construction’ or ‘Coming Soon’ messaging for those who visit your site.
3. Earn money: Many users buy domain and park it to generate income. A non-functional domain can be used to post advertisements and when someone visits your website, you earn money. Revenue is earned on a pay-per-click model.
4. Shutting down your site: In case you’ve decided to shut down your site but your domain name still hasn’t expired, you could park it and earn money.
5. An alias: Your parked domain could simply be an alias, pointing to your primary domain.

How to host your Parked Domain

1. Pick a domain name that’s already mapped to your account or if you wish, you can assign a new domain name to your account. 
2. Confirm the ownership of your domain in one of three ways: 
   • Name Servers: Update your Name Servers to ns1.bluehost_in and ns2.bluehost_in
   • Create HTML Page: Create an HTML page on your existing host containing the text provided.
   • EPP Code: This will not transfer your domain name, but use the EPP code to verify ownership.
3. Choose a Parked Domain
   • Addon Domain: An Addon domain name will function as its own separate domain name or website.
   • Parked Domain: A Parked domain name will load the same site located in your public_html, your main domain name.
4. Click the “Add Domain” button at the bottom of the page to assign the domain.
5. When you’re done, you’ll be able to see the domain listed in the Domain Manager tab.
